The major towns on the mainland are Bournemouth (at bottom left), Southampton (at centre) and Portsmouth (at right). The Solent separates the mainland from the Isle of Wight. The island's main town, Newport, is at its centre. At bottom is the English channel. Image taken by the French SPOT-1 satellite in June.
