Caption

Essex, UK, satellite image. The county of Essex lies to the north east of London (grey area, bottom left) and is one of the key commuter belts of the capital. Although much of the south of Essex is part of the Metropolitan Green Belt, preventing the mass-expansion of London into the county, Esssex has become the most populous county in England. The county town of Essex is Colchester, which is said to be the oldest town in Britain, as it was recorded by Pliny the Elder in 77 AD. Other important towns include Chelmsford and the 'new towns' of Basildon and Harlow which were developed after World War Two to rehouse homeless Londoners.
