Caption

First observation of a pair of W particles. Electronic display of an event recorded in 1996 at the DELPHI detector at CERN, the particle physics laboratory near Geneva. An electron & positron, accelerated to high energy in CERN's LEP collider, have entered the detector from left & right to annihilate at centre. Their energy materialises as two W particles, a W-plus & a W-minus. Each W decays to a quark & an antiquark which in turn initiates a jet of particles, producing the 4 jets that spray out through the detector (shown in cut- away in pink, purple & blue). The W particles are gauge bosons which, together with the neutral Z particle, are carriers of the weak nuclear force.
