Caption

Ozone map. Global distribution of ozone in the upper atmosphere, mapped on a Mercator projection and overlaid with a pattern showing the path of the satellite which gathered the data. The colours represent the concentration of ozone: red and yellow represent high levels whilst blue shows low levels (the ozone hole). Ozone is destroyed by the action of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases. The data for this map was gathered by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) instrument aboard an American satellite during 1987.
