European isobaric map. Isobaric map of western Europe (green) showing two anticyclones (high pressure systems, far left & right) and a depression (low pressure) over Great Britain. The map consists of lines of equal air pressure (isobars). The air pressure in the depression falls towards the centre of its tightly-spaced isobars. These systems often result from a warm air mass being forced upwards by cold air and are associated with unsettled weather. The air pressure in the anticyclones rises towards the centre of their widely-spaced isobars. They bring settled dry weather with light winds. Isobaric maps are needed for accurate weather forecasting.
