European isobaric map. Isobaric map of western Europe (green) showing a depression (low pressure) over Great Britain, surrounded by several anticyclones (high pressure systems). The map consists of lines of equal air pressure (isobars). The air pressure in the depression falls towards the centre of its tightly-spaced isobars. These systems often result from a warm air mass being forced upwards by cold air and are associated with unsettled weather. The air pressure in the anticyclones rises towards the centre of their widely-spaced isobars. They bring settled dry weather with light winds. Isobaric maps are needed for accurate weather forecasting.
