Production and decay of an upsilon particle, which consists of a bottom quark and antiquark bound together, in the DELPHI detector at CERN, the particle physics lab outside Geneva. The computer display shows the detector outlined in grey. An electron and positron, accelerated to high energy in CERN's LEP collider, annihilate at centre to create a high-energy quark and antiquark that give rise to the two jets of particles at left (green and blue tracks). Either the quark or antiquark also radiates a gamma-ray photon which in turn gives rise to the upsilon. The upsilon lives too briefly to be seen but reveals itself by its decay to two muons (red tracks at right).
