Production & decay of two Z particles in the L3 detector at CERN, the particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The computer display shows the cylindrical L3 detector in cross-section (yellow). An electron & positron, accelerated in CERN's LEP collider, annihilate at centre to produce two Z particles. They live too briefly to be seen but reveal themselves by their decays. One Z turns into a quark & antiquark which in turn produce two jets of other particles (tracks leading to magenta blocks). The second Z decays to an electron and a positron (single tracks leading to green spikes). The neutral Z is one of the carriers of the weak nuclear force.
