A shower of cosmic ray muons streams through the ZEUS detector at DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. In the computer display, the detector is seen in cross-section. Some of the cosmic ray muons are visible through their tracks (green) in the central part of the detector; many more muons deposit energy in the outer parts of the detector, lighting them up in yellow and red. Muons belong to the lepton family of particles, and are heavier versions of the electron.
