Antarctic research base. Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, situated at the geographic South Pole in Antarctica. This research base was built and is maintained by the USA. It was named in honour of Roald Amundsen and Robert F. Scott, who reached the South Pole in 1911 and 1912 respectively. The station houses the research scientists and support personnel who work at the Pole, along with much of their equipment.
