Glaciology research. Glaciologists using an ice drill or auger to create holes in the ice during a seismic investigation of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Explosive charges will be placed in the holes and the echoes of the resulting blasts used to determine the conditions beneath the ice sheet. The glaciologists are from the British Antarctic Survey, a group that carries out scientific research in the Antarctic.
