Ayles ice shelf breaking off. Satellite image showing the breaking off (calving) of the Ayles ice shelf from the coast of Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada. Here, an area of ice spanning 87 square kilometres cracked and separated to form an ice island now known as Ayles Ice Island. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites on 14th August 2005.
