Ice cliffs at the snout of Svitjodbreen Glacier, Fuglefjorden, Spitsbergen. As the glacier flows into the fjord, the water begins to take up the weight of the ice. Tension stresses within the ice cause blocks to break off, forming icebergs and leaving ice cliffs. The blue colour of the lower layers of ice show where the ice is most greatly compressed.
