Gulf of Suez. Combined infrared and optical satellite image of part of the Gulf of Suez, Egypt. North is at top. This is the arm of the Red Sea that lies west of the Sinai Peninsula (upper right). At lower left is part of mainland Egypt. Water appears black, and desert and mountain regions appear brown. This is a major shipping lane, as the Gulf of Suez is joined to the Mediterranean Sea by the Suez Canal (not seen). Photographed by Landsat 1 on 4th October 1972.
