Sea temperatures around the British Isles. Coloured satellite image depicting the sea surface temperatures around the British Isles. The colours are coded for temperature from red (warmest) through yellow and green to blue (coolest). Land masses are shown as black; the black region in the ocean at bottom left is an artefact. Cloud cover is shown as white. The generally warmer (red & yellow) seas to the west of the British Isles are caused by the influence of the warm Gulf Stream current. Note that coastal waters appear warmer due to solar heating in the shallows. The data for this image were gathered by an American NOAA weather satellite.
