Tsunami simulation. Second of 3 three-dimensional computer simulation images showing giant sea wave (tsunami) off the coast Portugal in 1755, 30 minutes after its formation during an earthquake. Water is blue and land is yellow-green. The tsunami (at lower left) is shown as ripples on the otherwise flat surface of the sea. Tsunamis travel at up to 725-800 kilometres per hour in deep water. This computer model was designed as part of the international Genesis and Impact of Tsunamis on European Coasts (GITEC) project to assess the effects of possible tsunamis in the near future.
