Caption

After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Infrared satellite image of the coastline around Port Blair, capital of the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Indian Ocean. This image was obtained on 28 December 2004. The colours show: vegetation (red), buildings (pale blue, right), the sea (dark blue) and clouds (white). This area is some 15 kilometres across. On 26 December 2004, a massive underwater earthquake, 700 kilometres away near Indonesia, created huge waves, or tsunamis, that devastated the region. Rivers and farmland (green) are flooded (lower centre; centre left). SPOT 5 satellite image. For this area before the tsunami, see image E275/018.
