After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Satellite image of part of the coastal city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, on 28 December 2004. The destruction seen here was caused by huge waves (tsunamis) from a massive earthquake, the world's largest for 40 years, that struck on 26 December. It occurred underwater, 250 kilometres from Banda Aceh. Large parts of the city were destroyed; massive piles of rubble (at left) were formed by the raging waters. Tens of thousands of people died in Banda Aceh. Many more died elsewhere, all around the Indian Ocean. The full death toll may never be known. Quickbird satellite image. Pre-tsunami image is E275/020.
