After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Satellite image of part of the coastal city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, on 28 December 2004. The destruction and flooding (centre and lower right) was caused by huge waves (tsunamis) from a massive earthquake, the world's largest for 40 years, that struck on 26 December. It occurred underwater, 250 kilometres from Banda Aceh. Large parts of the city were destroyed. The floodwaters are covering and destroying (by raised salt levels) farmland. Tens of thousands of people died in Banda Aceh. Many more died elsewhere. The full death toll may never be known. Quickbird satellite image. Pre-tsunami image is E275/022.
