After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Satellite image of the Grand Mosque part of the coastal city of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, on 28 December 2004. The immense destruction was caused by huge waves (tsunamis) from a massive earthquake, the world's largest for 40 years, that struck on 26 December. It occurred underwater, 250 kilometres from Banda Aceh. Debris (red bricks) and mud (brown) are filling the areas at centre. Tens of thousands of people died in Banda Aceh. Many more died elsewhere, all around the Indian Ocean. The full death toll may never be known. Quickbird satellite image. For the pre- tsunami image, see E275/026.
