Tsunami formation. Artwork of the formation of a tsunami following an underwater earthquake at a subduction zone. The panel at upper left shows the vertical movement of the seabed that generates the waves. The centre panel shows these waves moving rapidly (hundreds of kilometres an hour) in the open ocean, passing harmlessly under boats. At bottom, water recedes from a shoreline as the waves slow down and bunch up in shallow coastal areas, towering above the original sea level. A large mass of water crashes ashore as a tsunami, causing immense damage and destruction (lower right. The artworks shown here are explained in more detail as images E275/052 and E275/054.
