Caption

Madeira Abyssal Plain. Sonograph of part of the Saharan Rise of the Madeira Abyssal Plain, Atlantic Ocean. The swirling patterns in the top half of the frame are interference fringes caused by a layer of sediment about 25cm thick on the ocean floor. In the bottom of the frame is a large submarine channel. This sonograph covers a width (top to bottom) of about 6 kilometres, and was gathered by TOBI (Towed Ocean Bottom Instrument).
