Mid-ocean ridge. Image of the ocean floor showing two transform faults cutting across the Mid- Atlantic spreading ridge. The colours represent the depth of the ocean, from dark blue (deepest) through green, yellow and red to white (shallowest). The line of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is seen here as a large rift valley running down the frame. The dark blue horizontal feature at top is a large transform fault. The dark blue feature in the foreground is a small non-rigid transform fault. Note how part of the rift valley has slipped sideways (right) due to the transform fault in the foreground. This image was made using sonar and echo-sounding data.
