Caption

Computer map centred on India and the Indian Ocean showing some of the oceanic ridges. These are visible as lighter blue formations on the oceanic floors and represent the boundaries, which are drifting apart, between the plates carrying the continents and the oceanic floors. The Southeast Indian Ocean ridge runs almost horizontally between Australia and Antarctica. Near Madagascar it splits into the Southwest Indian Ocean ridge and the Carlsberg ridge. The first one, passing between South Africa and Antarctica, joins the Mid-Atlantic ridge at bottom left whereas the second one points towards the Arabian Sea.
