The horizontal divisions represent acceler- ation along a north-south line with the third line from top representing zero acceleration. The vertical divisions represent time intervals of five seconds. Kobe, Japan, was struck by an earthquake which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was close to the city, causing extensive damage and killing over 5000 people. Image recorded at the University of Tokyo.
