View of Popocatepetl, a dormant volcano in Mexico. The name derives from the Aztec language, meaning 'smoking mountain'. At 5,452m, it is the second highest peak in Mexico. The symmetrical cone includes a crater 300m across and 400m deep. The last major eruption was in 1702, although minor eruptions have been recorded as recently as 1920. The volcano is now surrounded by the 250 sq km Ixtaccihuatl-Popocatapetl National Park, established in 1935.
