Mount Fuji. Snow-covered Mount Fuji, a volcano on the island of Honshu, Japan. Fuji, a cone-shaped mountain, is the highest in Japan with a height of 3776 metres (12,389 feet) above sea level. It is a dormant volcano and at its peak has a crater which is 610 metres in diameter. Fuji was formed by the deposition of successive layers of rubble and lava (a stratovolcano), but has not erupted since 1707. The volcano is believed by many Japanese people to be holy and is a popular tourist attraction. Photograph taken from Oshino village in March.
