Kilimanjaro volcano. Infrared satellite image of Mount Kilimanjaro, an active volcano between Kenya (north, top) and Tanzania (south). In the infrared range grassland is grey, dense vegetation is red and clouds and snow are white. The volcano consists of two peaks Kibo (snow covered) and Mawensi (crater at centre left) which are 11 kilometres apart. Kibo is the highest point in Africa, being 5894 metres high. Fields of coffee and plantain are cultivated around the base of the volcano. Image taken by the French SPOT-3 satellite in February during the dry season.
