Anak Krakatau volcano. View of a large column of ash rising from the crater of the volcano Anak Krakatau. This is a new volcano formed from the ruins of the island of Krakatau. Krakatau blew itself to pieces in one of the largest eruptions ever in 1883. The noise of the eruption was said to be heard from 6000 kilometres away. Anak Krakatau began erupting in 1927, and has since built up a small island of ash and rock.
