Ngorongoro crater. View across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater showing a huge field of yellow flowers. Ngorongoro is the enormous caldera (large crater) of an extinct volcano. The crater is over 20 kilometres across at its widest point. The rim is at an altitude of around 2500 metres, with the crater floor about 600 metres below this. The mountainous rim encircles a level plain which is home to an enormous amount of wildlife. The crater is a conservation area in Tanzania.
