Volcanic ash. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of ash from the Mount St. Helens volcano, Washington State, USA. Volcanic ash consists of rock, minerals and volcanic glass fragments. It is created during explosive eruptions by the shattering of large rocks and the separation of molten rock into tiny pieces. Magnification: x800 at 6x7cm size.
