Volcanic landscape. Satellite image of cinder cones and calderas (collapsed volcano craters) in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Cinder or ash cones, such as that at centre left, are formed around a volcanic vent by the accumulation of lava fragments or volcanic ash. The data for this 10- metre-resolution image was obtained by the Spot-5 Earth observation satellite on 13 February 2000. The image covers an area approximately 13 kilometres wide.
