Emerald Lakes, New Zealand. View from Mount Tongariro's Red Crater volcanic vent (1900 metres) of the Emerald Lakes. These lakes have formed in several of the volcano's craters. Mount Tongariro has at least 12 separate volcanic vents, including Red Crater which last erupted in 1926. Mount Tongariro began to form some 260,000 years ago. Along with Mount Ngauruhoe, it forms the Tongariro volcanic complex on New Zealand's North Island.
