Solidified lava flow. Aerial photograph of solidified volcanic ash (black) in the Badlands, near Wyoming, USA. Ancient volcanoes rained ash down across this region, which over time has compacted forming hills such as this one. The name Badland comes from the French explorers who called them mauvaise terres a traverser (bad lands to cross).
