Molten spatter flies out of a cone on a newly formed shield near Puiu Oio cinder cone on Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. As the spatter falls, it collects around the vent to form a cone. A spatter cone is a low, steep-sided cone of spatter built up on a fissure or vent. It is usually of basaltic material.
