Volcano monitoring. Computer screen at a volcano observatory, showing the results of calculations made to detect volcanic activity at Vesuvius. This is the Osservatorio Vesuviano, Naples, Italy. It monitors the area around Naples. Vesuvius is an active volcano, which erupted in 79 AD and destroyed the ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The last eruption was in 1944.
