Cutaway of Earth. Cutaway illustration showing the Earth's interior structure. The inner core (yellow) consists of solid metal, mostly iron and nickel, at about 4000 degrees C. The outer core (spotted yellow) has a similar composition but is liquid. Outside the core is the mantle, a thick layer of molten rock at between 1500 and 3000 degrees C. Floating on top of the mantle is the crust, a thin layer of solid rock about 10km thick under the oceans and 30km thick where there are continents.
