Earth impact. Artwork of a fragmented comet or asteroid impacting onto the night side of Earth. The Moon is seen at centre right. The impact of a large body such as this would have catastrophic consequences for life on Earth. In addition to the damage caused by the initial impact, the long- term changes, such as climate cooling due to the dust ejected, would lead to countless human and animal deaths. A collision such as this is believed to have been responsible for the mass extinction of dinosaurs and other life some 65 million years ago.
