Dead Earth. Image 8 of 9. Artwork of the Earth hanging dead in space illuminated by the red giant Sun (out of frame at top left). This will occur in around five billion years. The outlines of the continents can be seen on Earth's surface. The atmosphere has evaporated into space, and meteorites rain down on the arid world. Orange impacts are seen on Earth's night side at right. The Sun will enter the red giant phase of its life as it uses up its nuclear fuel. As it expands it will engulf Mercury and Venus. For a sequence showing the death of the Earth as the Sun expands and dies, see images E402/058-066.
