Death of the Sun. Image 9 of 9. Artwork of the Sun becoming a planetary nebula at the end of its life. This ejection of gas is seen stripping the atmosphere from Neptune here (centre right). This will occur in over five billion years. The Sun will first become a red giant, but eventually all its nuclear fuel will be used up. This results in the outer layers of the Sun being ejected as the core cools to form a white dwarf. The Earth died long before this, being baked dry and finally engulfed as the red giant Sun expanded. For a sequence showing the death of the Earth as the Sun expands and dies, see images E402 058-066.
