The end of the world. Conceptual computer artwork of the Earth exploding. This represents the end of the world. There are many ways in which the world and life or civilization on it may come to an end. Past mass extinctions of life are thought to have been caused by meteorite impacts, climate change, volcanic eruptions or supernovae, and may happen again in the future. Humans are now considered to have contributed to climate change. They may also damage the Earth and life on it, through pollution or nuclear, chemical and biological warfare. The Earth will be destroyed when the Sun becomes a red giant star in around 5 billion years time.
