Asteroid approaching Earth. Artwork of the Earth eclipsing the Sun, seen from the surface of an approaching asteroid. The asteroid is around 100,000 kilometres from Earth. If it hit the Earth, it would cause devastation over a wide area. The impact would throw a huge amount of material into the atmosphere, which would block out sunlight and lower global temperatures. It is thought that a similar impact was responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.
