Expaning Sun and Earth. Computer artwork of the Sun and Earth. It is estimated that in 5-6 billion years, the Sun will have exhausted the hydrogen fuel in its core and will begin burning hydrogen in a shell surrounding the core. This will cause the Sun to expand by 100 times and engulf the inner planets and possibly the Earth. At the expanded stage, the Sun is known as a red giant. Eventually, the outer layer of the core is ejected by stellar winds to form a planetary nebula. The core will eventually collapse into a white dwarf star.
