Caption

Strata in a limestone rock face, a sedimentary rock of calcium carbonate. Most of the strata seen here are pale brown, the colour due to small amounts of other minerals. There are also two major strata of very compact, grey-coloured limestone visible. The limestone was deposited during the Jurassic period (190 million to 136 million years ago), and was formed by the agglomeration of calcareous shells of various organisms. Such limestones may be used for decorative building materials or as a gravel aggregate. Photographed in a quarry near Genkingen, Germany.
