Sedimentary rock. This sandstone was formed by the deposition of successive layers of sediment, later compressed into rock. The narrow lines, known as cross-bedding, were produced by changes in the direction of the depository water over time. Photographed in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah, USA.
