Verrucano rock sample. Verrucano is a hemiplagic sedimentary rock famous for its red colour. It originates in the Swiss region of Glarus in the valley of the Sernf ("Sernftal") and is therefore also called sernifite. It is also called Glarner Verrucano. It forms part of the Glarus Thrust, an area of upthrust rock in the Alps. It is often found some distance from its point of origin, carried there by glacial action, in this case by the Linth Glacier. This sample is from Verrucano, Switzerland.
