Sand. Sand is a loose granular substance resulting from the wearing down of arenaceous rock, a type of detrital sedimentary rock, usually sandstone. Particle size ranges from 1/16 millimetres to 2mm. Sand may be accumulated by wind action as in deserts, or deposited by water action on the sea- shore or in riverbeds.
