Sand and stones. Sand is a loose, fine granular substance resulting from the wearing down of arenaceous rock, a type of detrital sedimentary rock, usually sandstone. Particle size ranges from 1/16 millimetres to 2mm. Stones are larger in size. Sand may be accumulated by wind action as in deserts, while both sand and stones may be deposited by water action on the seashore or in riverbeds.
