Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of gabbro, an igneous rock. Gabbro contains the minerals olivine & plagioclase feldspar. Olivine is recognised in the microscope by its numerous, randomly oriented fractures. Plagioclase feldspar forms lath-shaped crystals consisting of multiple twins. In this micrograph, these twins are seen in a variety of colours because a first-order red compensator plate, or "tint plate", has been placed in the microscope. Magnification: x6 at 35mm size.
