Caption

Cross polarised light micrograph of a thin section of syenite, a coarse-grained igneous rock, containing the mineral augite. Augite occurs as a black to greenish-black, prismatic crystal which in cross-section appears almost square or octagonal. It is a common component of basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, dolerite and basalt. Magification: x3 at 35mm size.
